Proxy Parent

What is a Proxy Parent?

Proxy parenting is a live-in Nanny that can be part of the family for a minimum of 24 hours up to a few weeks or months. Unlike a daily Nanny, overnight Nanny or Temporary Nanny, a proxy parent can have sole charge of the children for 24 hours a day, with no parent present. They have sole responsibility of the home, the children, pets and other individuals in or around the home (i.e. other staff).

Many Proxy parents have experience with all ages and are happy caring for multiple children of varying age alone. They have gained experience caring for multiple children at a time as well as dealing with home duties. Depending on booking time, duties a proxy parent can carry out vary:

  • Meal preparation
  • Nursery duties and light housework
  • Taking children to and from school, and clubs/activities
  • Taking children to play dates (authorised by parents)
  • The daily bedtime routine
  • Administering medication (authorised by parents)
  • Washing and ironing of children’s clothes

The benefits of a Proxy Parent are the comfort of knowing your child/children can stick to their usual routine whilst you are away and having a trustworthy and reliable individual in your home. As well as this, having an individual that your children trust means you can leave them at home feeling safe and happy with an individual that has become part of the family. Overall, an ease to yourself and your children whilst away from home.

How much is a Proxy Parent?

Most Proxy Parent roles are temporary, and the Nanny undertaking the role is usually self-employed.

For a 24-hour placement, a Proxy Parent wage costs between £312-£450+ gross per 24 hours or £13-£19+ gross per hour.

What is the difference between a Proxy Parent and Live-in Nanny?

A Proxy parent has sole charge of the children throughout the day and night, whilst parents are absent. A Live-In Nanny lives at home with the family, but of an evening the parents are around, and the Nanny has the evening ‘off’ whilst the parents are in. Occasional evening childcare is acceptable, but the parents arrive home after an evening out (for example).
