What is a private household chef and cook?
Private chefs will usually plan and prepare food for parties and other events as well as caring for the day-to-day dining requirements of the family. A private chef would prepare gourmet meals in a client’s home and cook exclusively for one family.
Private chefs are responsible for all the meal preparation and stocking of the kitchen including the ordering of the groceries. They should possess extensive knowledge regarding a range of menus and the ability to prepare a special meal for the client. A private chef works among other household staff, some families may hire a specific chef for his/her knowledge of the food of one region or country.
Private chef salaries are dependent on experience. Generally, a chef would work 8-12 hours per day, they may also work on a rota basis with other chefs.
A live-in chef can vary from £20,000 – £50,000 per year gross
A live out chef can vary from £30,000 – £70,000 per year gross
By the hour, a private chef costs £30-£70+ per hour gross
Duties:
- Prepare and cook meals for the clients and guests.
- Clean and sanitize the client’s kitchen after use.
- May be responsible for kitchen budgets and accounts.
- Work closely with their employers to cater for a specific personal preference.
- Food shopping.
- Menu planning.
- Liaise closely with the housekeeper.
Summary
Private chefs cook for one family, they will work closely with the family to cater specific personal preferences. Responsible for planning and preparing the food for the family or parties and other events. They may be required to do food shopping if there are missing ingredients. Some chefs work in a rota basis so this allow the other chefs to take breaks as some chefs may be required to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or they just prepare dinner.
