Easter and Springtime Activity Ideas

Easter is fast approaching and bringing with it the lovely springtime. Here are some ideas for some spring and Easter related activities to try.

Floating Eggs

This is a great activity for developing your child’s motor skills and hand eye coordination. Fill up a large, deep bowl with water and add some plastic eggs so they float on the top. Provide some kitchen tongs for your child to pick up the eggs with. If the plastic eggs you get are the kind that can come apart so that something can be put inside you can adapt this to make a simple matching game. Put matching objects in some of the eggs and take it in turns to try to find a matching pair.

Language Rich Easter Hunt

This activity provides a great way for children to learn and practice using prepositions. Hide some Easter Eggs and/or Easter themed things around the room and task your child with finding them. When they find they ask them where they found it, encouraging them to use language such as under, next to, opposite, behind, in front etc.

Have a game of Chickers!

Very similar to the traditional game of Checkers! If you have the game of Checkers at home simply task your child with drawing 24 chicks in two different colours (12 of each colour) then cut them out and stick them on to the usual round playing pieces and you are ready to play Chickers!

Bake Some Easter Themed Treats

There are so many recipes out there for Easter themed bakes but we particularly love some of these ideas from Good Housekeeping > https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/holidays/easter-ideas/g4141/easter-treats/

Make Giant Easter Eggs

Using coloured tissue paper and PVA glue to make papier mâché gives a lovely effect for making giant Easter eggs. Add a small amount of water to some PVA glue to make a smooth, runny paste. Inflate a balloon and allow your child to tear up the tissue paper in to smaller pieces. Using the glue and water mixture your child can stick the tissue paper on to the balloon until the balloon is completely covered. Add several layers to give your finished egg more strength and make sure you finish with a layer of the glue and water mixture. Leave your child’s creation to dry overnight and, once it is fully dried, pop and remove the balloon. Your child may like to add some more decorations at this stage, glitter is always a favourite of mine!

Colour Changing Flowers

Stand some white coloured flowers in water and add a good amount of food colouring to the water. Observe the flowers over the coming days and watch them gradually change colour.

Go For A Nature Walk

This time of year always sees lots of changes in the environment, new plants are growing, trees are bearing blossom, many animals will be having babies. You can really help your child to tune in to the environment and notice all of the changes that are happening by creating a list of things for them to look out for on a walk. Think about where you will go and about the things you may see and create a list of things for your child to try to spot. Include photographs of the things they may see and attach it to a clipboard with a pencil so they can tick off the things as they see them. You could also take your own photographs of your child with the things they have spotted to print and match to the list when you get home.

Plant Sunflower Seeds

The best time to plant sunflower seeds is between mid-April and the end of May and you should start to see seedlings sprouting after about a week. There are some helpful tips on planting sunflower seeds here > https://nurturestore.co.uk/how-to-grow-sunflowers-with-children

Painting Terracotta Plant Pots

Use acrylic paint to add some colour to the terracotta plant pots in your garden or paint some new ones and then plant some seeds in them and watch them grow!
