Changing seasons – Summer to Autumn

The Arrival of Autumn
As we prepare to say good bye to summer for another year, we can eagerly await Autumn. Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter and whilst some people find it hard to say goodbye to the warmer weather, others adore this time of year.
A true sign that Autumn is upon us is when the evenings start to become darker earlier and the mornings stay darker for longer. The weather begins to feel colder as the temperature starts to fall. A significant sign of the arrival of Autumn will be when the leaves start to change colour from green into rich reds and yellows and start to shed.
Autumnal activities for children to get involved with
A selection of fun, crafty, and learning ideas and activities for children to get involved in all relating to Autumn:
Leaf Printing
All you will need for this fun, arty activity will be:
- Leaves – Choose from a selection of the Autumnal leaves that have fallen from the trees
- Paints – A variety of autumnal colours (Red, brown, yellow)
- Paper to print onto
- Rolling pin to create the perfect effect
What to do:
- Gather up some leaves in a variety of different shapes and sizes
- Paint on to the leaf.
- Place the painted leaf onto a piece of paper and place another piece of paper over the top
- Press down! (You may find that using a rolling pin is a better effective tool to create the perfect stamp)
- Remove the paper on top to reveal your finished piece of art!
Drawing, colouring and painting
Lots of Autumnal themed drawing, colouring and painting can be done.
A few ideas:
- Pumpkins
- Scarecrows
- Squirrels
- Conkers
- Acorns
- Trees/leaves
- Sunflowers
Collecting Conkers/acorns
A true sign that Autumn has arrived is when we see conkers and acorns beginning to fall from the trees.
Children enjoy going out and seeing what they can find. Have a go at going conker hunting and see if you can build up a collection of conkers.
Baking
Having fun and getting creative in the kitchen is the perfect activity for children to get involved with. Have a go at baking some ‘Autumn themed’ treats to get you in the mood for this coming season.
When you think of Autumn, what comes to mind? Halloween, falling leaves, darker evenings? Maybe it it a specific colour, red, orange or brown. Whatever you relate to the season, try and incorporate it into your baking.
A few ideas:
- Cookies in a variety of shapes – pumpkins, leaves or candy corn
- Toffee apple cake
- Pumpkin spice cake
- Apple & cinnamon crisps
