A Letter to the Prime Minister on behalf of all Nannies in the UK from Harmony at Home and BAPN

Joint Statement; 10^th August 2021

BAPN and Harmony at Home today wrote to the Prime Minister in support of nannies, urging recognition for their sterling work during the global pandemic.

We were thrilled to see sections of the childcare and early years workforce celebrated recently when the Prime Minister hosted a Garden Reception at 10 Downing Street to say thank you to childminders and nursery workers for their continued efforts throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and we hope now to see recognition for the integral role nannies play, many of whom have worked throughout the pandemic.

BAPN (British Association for Professional Nannies)

BAPN is the only nanny specific membership association in the UK.  We represent nannies countrywide, offering them employment advice, support, and personal representation when needed.

Throughout the pandemic we’ve supported numerous nannies who were required to continue working in private households, often with no provision for social distancing, mixing households in nanny share positions, and forced to use public transport when government guidance was to avoid doing so.  Many nannies continued working, supporting their employers even though they themselves were vulnerable.

Throughout the pandemic we worked tirelessly to enable parents to carry on working.  When regular childcare was affected by Covid-19 we worked with parents to safely meet their needs.  Nannies in the home setting provide dedicated childcare and over the last 18 months or so, many nannies placed their employer’s safety above their own.  They couldn’t work from home when the government wanted most of us to do so, they couldn’t be furloughed as their employer continued to require childcare to enable them to work, and, in many cases, a Covid Risk Assessment wasn’t readily available.

Nannies have been a lifeline for thousands of parents whose usual childcare provision closed or was only available to key workers.

On behalf of the nanny workforce we represent, we are hopeful the government will want to publicly show its gratitude and support for the many thousands of nannies working in the UK and to the organisations working in support of the nanny industry of which there are many.
