20%+ Pay Rise for Nannies in Greater London and Home Counties

The Nannytax salary index released on Wednesday 28th July using data from the 20/21 tax year showed a 18.92% increase in nanny salaries in the Greater London area. Pay for Nannies in the Home Counties, which include Sussex, Surrey, Kent Essex, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Berkshire in Southeast England have risen by 19% since 2019

Speculation regarding the uplift has been cited as a direct result of the effect of Covid-19, where families leave the capital for a more sizable and green home where flexible working is best supported, along with a shortage of Nannies due to Brexit, and a shortage of skilled Childcare Practitioners with the reduction of EU workers.

The increased demand for flexible, safe in-home childcare was highlighted by the pandemic, with many nannies working for families who previously relied on Nurseries, and other childcare businesses. Nannies were confirmed to be the only private childcare providers able to work during the lockdowns.

Harmony at Home believes that Nannies are the ideal solution for many families looking for safe, flexible, in-home childcare.

Many professional nannies now offer hybrid services, including Housekeeping, Household Management and Personal Assistant duties along with Tutoring and Home Schooling. For working parents, this provides vital support, enabling a great work life balance.

The pandemic highlighted the need for Nannies to be regulated and given the same childcare scheme rebates from the government to enable working parents to have the freedom to choose a Nanny over other childcare providers.

Frankie Gray, Founder and Director of Harmony at Home, says “We have seen a surge in enquires from new families in the Greater London and Home Counties regions as they relocate outside of the capital city, due to the increased prevalence of work from home flexibility created by the pandemic. This along with the shortage of childcarers entering the UK due to Brexit has created a nannies market, with salaries soaring around the UK and especially for highly qualified and experienced nanny roles. We are finding that many families are newly interested in the services of in-home childcare provided by a professional nanny. Many of these families have not used a nanny before, and now realise the benefits of flexibility and safety in their home setting. With more job openings than nannies, the industry is witnessing a paradigm shift both in pay and benefits but also in the flexibility and hours of the roles on offer. This is most welcome, as many nannies have worked tirelessly to support families though the pandemic it’s wonderful to see their hard work rewarded by such an uplift in salaries.”

Charlotte Maggs, Franchise Support Manager at Harmony at Home said; “Seeing such growth in the demand for nannies, alongside such a rise in salaries, is showing us how flexible childcare is now becoming an essential childcare option for families. The pandemic has highlighted just how important nannies can be, and how vital their roles have been in enabling key workers, and so many others, to continue with their work. Nannies and the flexible childcare arrangements they can provide, in the comfort of the child’s own home, are now being recognized as so hugely important for all kinds of families. We are, at last, seeing nannies have the recognition they deserve, and being valued for the hard work they continue to do, for both the families they work for, and the children in their care.”
